What is a Driving license format?

Driving licence is an official document that authorises its holder to operate various types of motor vehicles on highways and some other roads to which the public have access. In various Indian states, they are administered by the Regional Transport Authorities/Offices (RTA/RTO). Indian driving license has designed by the following format. Totally it has 13 digits.

GJ : GJ is for state code i.e. Gujrat.
12 : RTO code-mostly digital, except in Delhi. This is usually one per district and if the district is bigger geographically or population wise then there can be multiple RTOs per district (In Gujrat 12 is kutch-bhuj’s RTO code, In Maharashtra, 12 for Pune, 31 for Nagpur).
2019 : 2019 is year of issue/
0000001 :Last seven digits is Driver Profile ID basically DL no which are alloted in series.

So the for format of driving license becomes, SS-DD-YYYY-CCCCCCCCC (without hyphens)
SS: Unique State Code (alphabetical)
DD: Unique RTO Jurisdiction Code (Numeric)
YYYY: Year of issue (Numeric of course)
CCCCCCCCC: Serial number of the licence issued in given state, RTO and year of issue.

Here is a step by step procedure for renewal of driving license online in India

  • Step 1 : Navigate to parivahan.gov.in. Select option as per your state.
  • Step 2 : In Apply Online section go to Services on Driving license (Renewal/Duplicate/Others)

  • Step 3 : Now you will be redirected to new page, just click on continue, You will then be redirected to a page wherein you will be required to fulfill basic details such as your DL/ driving license number, date of birth and others details of that are must for driving license.

  • Step 4: On filling the form, you will have to then visit the RTO for verification of the documents.
  • Step 5 :Once the documents are verified, you will receive the renewed DL on the same day or in a span of 15 days.
