What is RC and why registration certificate of vehicle/vahan is important?

A Registration certificate is an official document that is issued when someone registers their motor vehicle. RC is a document that proves your vehicle is registered with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) authorities and also acts as a proof that the motor vehicle belongs to a specific person. In India, it is mandatory to register your motor vehicle. If you are caught driving on the road without a valid RC, it is a punishable offence that attracts imprisonment or fine or both. Also, parents of minors found driving without a valid Learner’s Licence will be punished severely for giving their vehicle to a minor. The registration certificate of a vehicle is valid for 15 years from the date of issue and can be renewed for a period of 5 years after it expires.

The Government of India has made it mandatory to carry a copy of the RC card/book while you are driving. Nowadays, you can avail your Registration Certificate copy in the form of a Smart card.


What should you do when RC/registration certificate of vehicle is Lost?

Here are the some process that you need to follow, if your RC/registration certificate of vehicle is stolen or Lost?

If you have lost your RC or it has been stolen, you must get a duplicate RC book or card. Getting a duplicate RC is a hassle-free process. However, you should have the following documents in place to obtain a copy of the RC book:

Very first File an FIR at the nearest police station where you lost your RC.

File an application for a duplicate RC. You will have to get Form 26 for this.

Get a signature of your vehicle financier if you have purchased the vehicle on loan.

Submit Form 26 along with supporting documents and complaint letter at the RTO office that issued you the original RC.
